The following is a sample extract of an unedited draft chapter of our forthcoming book, Tax Return Made Simple which addresses each of the 12 challenges that stop most business owners from doing their tax return and their accounts.
Challenge 4: Everything is important! Just how am I supposed to prioritise!
Solution: Remember your pain point and get honest about what you REALLY want.
I love helping others with their finances, I truly do, and I would do it day and night if I could but over time I have come to realise there are other things in my life that matter a lot to me and if I neglect these, life is no longer fun for me.
We can change our beliefs and perception around our challenges, but we are limited as to how much time we have available on any given day or week because we really do only have 24hrs a day which as stated in the previous chapter, is further reduced to 12 hours after sleep, cooking, eating and bathing is given consideration.
12hrs! If that hasn’t sunk in yet, please give it time to do so now
To do what we want to achieve within 12hrs requires us to be focused, firm and disciplined. You can just go with the flow if you want but you may find you don’t get where you want to be and that’s ok. Being disciplined with your time might not get you there either, because well, life has a habit of throwing a few curveballs but your success rate will be higher than if you do just go with the flow. However, that depends on what success really means for you.
In Successful Business Minds, I asked the reader to take time to define what they really wanted out of life and align it with their business goals. If you want to live a very peaceful life you can do that with going the flow and being disciplined. If you want to achieve or contribute something specific, being disciplined with your time is the only way, at least it is as far as I’m aware. All business leaders and even spiritual teachers will all tell you that you need to take action, and that action must be aligned with your overall intentions.
It doesn’t mean you have to work every one of those 12hrs on your business though. If you’ve read Successful Business Minds, you’ll know I introduce the concept of balance across your heart, soul, mind & body, therefore it’s important that you take that into account when prioritising. I recommend you get yourself a copy of Successful Business Minds if you need help addressing all your needs and wants without traditional beliefs influencing you. However, assuming you know exactly what you really want, we’ll continue.
Acknowledge what you want, let’s prioritise!
There is actually no right or wrong way to prioritise but you can learn from your own mistakes (and those of others) then keep carve your own way. As discussed in the previous chapter, you need to allocate the time you have available across your business, your family and friends (assuming you want to see them!) and anything/ anyone else that you wish to give attention too including doing something for yourselves that nourishes you and keep you sane! The latter being incredibly important…
