According to a popular bookseller’s UK website, at the time of writing, there are over 50,000 books on tax. So, why should you read this one? Well, most of those other books lack two things. And the good news is, this book has them both!
In the Magical Mix of Money & Tax, I explore the two most common reasons that prevent business owners like you from filing their return before the deadline: mindset and lack of time.
If you find yourself procrastinating when it comes to managing your accounts, or are always too busy, then this book is for you.
Feel Empowered Knowing That You Have Your Accounts Covered
This book will give you the motivation and the practical skills to file your tax return as soon as it’s due. It will take you from feeling uneasy about your accounts to feeling motivated and empowered, knowing that you have them under control.
In my financial coaching sessions, I often hear people say that they don’t like the idea of doing their tax return. They keep putting it off until they’re forced to take responsibility as the deadline looms. I wrote The Magical Mix of Money & Tax to address this mindset and to help self-employed people overcome their limiting attitudes to paying tax.
I’d love to be able to help everyone on a one-to-one basis, but I also have restrictions on my time (and that Friends box set isn’t going to watch itself). Rather than write another book about how to do your tax return, I wanted to use my NLP training and imminent psychology degree to offer something more valuable – an insight into your tax mindset. I want to challenge your beliefs about money and tax and steer you towards a more prosperous way of thinking.
Practical, Actionable Steps to Filing Your Tax Return
At 143 pages, this book is designed to be read in a day. After all, I wouldn’t want to take up too much of your time – you have a tax return that needs filing… The book has two distinct parts. Part one looks at your current tax mindset. It gets to the core of why you procrastinate and explains how to overcome it. Part two provides a step-by-step guide to organising your accounts and completing the SA100 tax return form.
In writing this book, I’ve tried to keep the jargon to a minimum. I’ve included every day examples and been mindful of using straightforward language with no fluff, but plenty of humour.
After reading this book, I hope that you’ll feel:
Confident in completing your personal tax return on your own
Empowered about your finances and more in control
More informed about financial matters and better able to talk about money
Able to implement small steps to avoid procrastination and manage your time better
Self-assured in pricing your services more effectively
Here’s a snippet from the introduction of The Magical Mix of Money & Tax:
Just like learning how to drive, learning how to do your accounts, or manage your money wisely is something we only learn through practical experience and being guided by others.
Having your own business doesn’t mean you know what to do when it comes to accounts, finance, tax, budgeting, and pricing, but it is giving you valuable practical experience. You may need guidance because no one has taught you how to do your tax return or manage your money. You’ve simply been observing the behaviours of others and translating the odd throw-away comment.
Until someone taught you to drive a car skilfully, you couldn’t drive – the years you were driven about by others showed you how to fill the car with petrol or what side of the road to drive on, but it didn’t tell you the practicalities of how to use the clutch and what pressure to apply on the brake. The same principle applies to your finances.
Over the coming chapters, I’m going to give you 12 guides that will teach you the basic underlying facts about business finances and managing money. These will walk you through the steps needed to do your tax return easily without stress. These guides will contain solutions enabling you to organise your accounts and consist of practical tips and psychological insights.
What Other People Say About the Magical Mix of Money & Tax
“You would think that a book with ‘tax’ in the title would be dry and difficult to read. Well, unbelievably, Helen has managed to write it in such a chatty style that it is easy to read, very accessible, and dare I say, even enjoyable! Importantly, it also covers four main areas which are exceptionally helpful if you are self-employed.’’
Anna Davies, Achieve Balance
“This book is a superb read for those looking to file their tax return with ease. It is so refreshing to have a book about tax returns that is simply laid out and easy to understand. Helen writes in a wonderfully calming manner and adds lots of humour along the way which inclines you to keep reading and gives you lots of confidence that you can take control of your finances.’’
Charly Anderson, Business Owner & Lead Drama Practitioner, Love Drama
“From the moment I started reading I felt that this book was aimed at me, each of the chapters addressed a problem which I have and I literally couldn’t believe it. My first thought was that I would be ashamed for people to know how disorganised/last minute I have been with my finances, but this book helped me see that I am not alone. I actually knew that but it was still validating and more importantly motivated me to change. I feel that I can change and I am changing.’’
Jen Wood, Coach, Psychotherapist and Consultant
